About the Club

The Club was originally formed in August 1887 and holds a prestigious Queens Charter.

Though steeped in tradition the Club has undergone a $3 million dollar revamp which has included extensive alterations to the Bar, Bistro, Restaurant and Garden Bar facilities.

Future developments are for a new $19 million hotel and conference centre.

The Club is recognised as having modern facilities and is the Entertainment hub of Petone, Lower Hutt and Wellington region.

The Club currently has over 10,000 members who are young and old, male and female, from all walks of life with diverse interests.

History of the Club

Peel's Building 1887-1890

The Peel's Building was situated in Jackson St just east of the Empire Hotel. Leased in 1887, it became the Club's first premises for a period of three years.

Priests Building 1890-1896

This building still stands on the southwestern corner of Jackson St and Fitzherbet St. It served Club membership from 1890.

Comber's Property 1896-1927

This one story private residence was purchased in 1896 and was home to the Club until 1927. Situated on the corner of Petone Avenue and Campbell Terrace, it was demolished in 1927 to make way for a brand new building on the same site.

The Old Club 1927-1977

Opened on 23rd June 1927, the building was erected on the Comber's Property site for a contract price of $19,000 pounds. The building still exists and is affectionately referred to members as the "Old Club".

Current Premises, Udy St 1977-Now

Opened on 6th August 1977 this building has previously received several additions including a new restaurant and Games Room. It has most recently undergone a comprehensive refurbishment.
